* * * * * * * * * * * * * You, the UPS Designated Responder, will be called if a package is: Damaged and leaking a liquid or solid material (powder) Leaking and has labels or markings to indicate the contents are hazardous materials/dangerous goods or biological substances Leaking and is generating smoke or visible fumes; or giving off an odor that is irritating the skin, eyes, nose or throat Leaking and has no external markings or labels that identify contents Your job as a Designated Responder is to safely identify, contain, clean up and dispose of the waste generated by the leaking, damaged package. This training is intended to teach you how to fulfill this responsibility in a way that ensures personal safety as well as the safety of other employees and the environment. We will complete a number of hands-on exercises during this training. The exercises will help you learn and remember the proper procedures so that you can respond with confidence when a spill occurs. Most of the spills you will encounter involve everyday materials, the kinds of things you might have in your own home or could find at the hardware store. Nevertheless, we need to take precautions with every damaged package. We cannot always be certain of the contents, so it is important to follow proper safety procedures with each spill. UPS has developed detailed procedures for handling all kinds of materials. However, I’d like to emphasize that our procedures call for the use of Outside Responders to handle situations involving certain dangerous goods. Each facility has identified local contractors or governmental agencies who have the expertise to respond to Dangerous Goods spills. Outside Responders will be used when the spill involves a prohibited dangerous good or the spill is too large for existing supplies, or no UPS Designated Responder is available.
