This is because, for decades, running out of storage space was a seriously bad thing for applications, and it was extremely painful and time consuming to provision more storage. So overprovisioning five times or more for applications is still not uncommon. With thin provisioning, you set a starting capacity and a maximum capacity and forget it. As the storage is used, additional capacity is allocated automatically through the“autogrow”process. Thin provisioning dynamically allocates storage internally only as it is actually used while reporting full allocations to hosts, significantly lowering storage use. Thin provisioning requires Dynamic Disk Pools, but at volume creation time you simply check a“Thin provision this volume”box and put in the starting capacity and the maximum capacity. After that, the autogrow process takes care of the rest. This directly translates into increased storage efficiency, sometimes with your gaining as much as a 35–40% improvement in storage usage, which also means reduced capacity, power, and cooling needs.
