英国文学经典阅读·作品文本研究PPT The Life Story of Jonathan Swift  乔纳森·斯威夫特 (1667—1745) Born in Dublin, Ireland. Studied at Dublins Trinity College At 19 Swift went to England to serve as a private of Sir William Temple , a powerful English statesman. The editor of the official Tory organ, The Examiner He joined in the struggle of the Irish people against their English oppressors. In 1742 he was declared of unsound mind and memory and died 19 October 1745. Summary of Gulliver’s Travels The book has deep influence in the present day and can be justly ranked among the best novel of world literature. The master is?Doctor?Lemuel Gulliver. The story makes up with four parts. It tells ?extraordinary?adventures?happened to Gulliver in different four countries. First voyage---Lilliput (小人国） Second voyage---Brobdingnag （大人国） Be taken home by a farmer Final voyage---Houyhnhnm(惠马国） Be abandoned by his sailors in a land I attempted to rise, but was not able to stir: for, as I happened to lie on my back, I found my arms and legs were strongly fastened on each side to the grand; and my hair , which was long and thick, tied down in the same manner. Interesting point： the life in Laputa  （飞岛国） Laputa is a mysterious land inhabited by scientists, magicians, and sorcerers (男巫），who engage in ridiculous experiment. A kingdom devoted to the arts of music and mathematics. There astronomers used the laws of magnetism to move the island up, down, forward, backward, and sideways. The king has two methods of punishment The first and the mildest course is by keeping the island hovering over such a town, deprive them of sun and rain The second and ….they are pelted from above with great stones, and let the island drop directly upon their heads, which makes a universal destruction.
