INDICATIONS TO PILOT We have instruments in the airplane to let us know how the engine is performing Tachometer Oil pressure gauge Oil temperature gauge EGT gauge TACHOMETER Tells what RPM the engine is running at Calibrated in hundreds of RPM TACHOMETER Green arc shows maximum continuous operating range Red line shows the engine or propeller limitations At a given altitude, the higher that tachometer reading the higher the power output Power output depends on air density As altitude increases, must open the throttle 2300 RPM at 5000 feet will produce less power than 2300 RPM at sea level OIL PRESSURE GAUGE Provides a direct indication of oil system operation Measures pressure in pounds per square inch (psi) of the oil supplied to the engine Green is normal operating range Red indicates maximum and minimum pressures OIL TEMPERATURE GAUGE Measures the temperature of the oil Green shows normal operating range Red line indicates maximum allowable temperature OIL TEMPERATURE GAUGE High temperatures may indicate: A plugged line Low oil quantity Blocked oil cooler Defective temperature gauge Low temperature may indicate wrong oil viscosity during cold weather operations EGT GAUGE Exhaust gas temperature gauge Measures the temperature of the gases at the exhaust manifold EGT GAUGE Temperature varies with the ratio of fuel to air entering the cylinder Can be highly accurate for indicating the correct mixture setting Used for leaning EMERGENCY/ABNORMAL SITUATIONS Emergency situation: a condition of being threatened by serious and/or imminent danger and of requiring immediate assistance Abnormal situation: a condition concerning the safety of an aircraft or other vehicle, or of some person on board or within sight, but which does not require immediate assistance 2 kinds that we can prevent before we even start flying Detonation Preignition Will discuss other emergency/abnormal situations later DETONATION Uncontrolled, explosive ignition of the fuel/air
