Over 70 serotypes of enterovirus have been isolated from man. Their normal site of replication is the Gl tract, where the infection can be subclinical or result in a mild Gl disorder. However, in a proportion of cases, the virus spreads to other organs, causing severe disease which are typical of individual enterovirus types.
