In order to make a straw checkerboard, straw of wheat, rice, reeds, or other plants is placed in the shape of a checkerboard, one half buried in the soil and the other half exposed above the soil. Sand accumulates within checkerboard boundaries, forming a hard surface crust that functions as a wall to stop sand from being blown away. In addition, drought-tolerant plants are planted to mitigate the impact of desertification. Pieces of checkerboards become sand barriers, preventing desert encroachment in the arid or semi-arid regions. By applying this method, three primary sandy areas of Maowusu, Hunshandake, and Horqin, and the surrounding areas of the Kubuqi Desert have been transformed from barren lands into oases. ;The successful employment of the straw checkerboard sand barriers provides a critical lesson for countries suffering from desertification, particularly Algeria.
