Particular NegativesNegation is the process of denying something. A particular negative is a negative statement that specifies the entity or entities to which the denial applies. For example, when you say “I dont like apples,” youre making a particular negative statement that applies only to liking apples. The same applies to a particular negative statement that refers to any other thing, entity, person, behavior, concept, etc. Particular negatives are used to make statements that emphasize a specific limitation. For example, if you say “I dont like apples,” you are emphasizing that you dont like apples, but not oranges or any other fruit. The same applies to particular negatives which can be used to emphasize any other kind of restriction.Particular negatives can be used to make a more specific statement, such as “I dont like apples, but I do like oranges.” This statement makes it clear that you dont like apples, but that you like oranges. Particular negatives can also be used to make a statement about a particular amount or number of something: “I dont have three apples; I only have two.” This statement emphasizes that you dont have three apples, and that you only have two. Particular negatives are also used to make generalizations. For instance, you might say “Most people dont like apples.” This statement tells us that the majority of people dont like apples, and that this is a generalization based upon the people who have been surveyed or observed. Particular negatives can be used to make comparisons. For example, if you say “I dont like apples as much as oranges,” you are emphasizing that you dont like apples as much as oranges. This statement emphasizes the relative difference between apples and oranges. Particular negatives can be used to make statements of exclusion. For example, if you say “I dont eat apples,” you are emphasizing that you are not including apples as part of your diet. This statement excludes apples from being consumed, and is
