Advanced English Learning: An Analysis Of Confusing Rhetorical Contrasts The English language has a myriad of nuances and complex rules that can quickly become overwhelming for second language learners. However, one of the most challenging and perplexing elements of English for non-native speakers is the concept of rhetorical contrast. It is not uncommon for non-native speakers to get confused and make mistakes due to the subtle differences between rhetorical contrast and the erroneous application of the same. In this article, we will examine the various types of rhetorical contrast and explain how to differentiate between them. First of all, let’s define what rhetorical contrast actually is. Rhetorical contrast is a stylistic device used for comparison or contrast, helping readers to better understand an argument. The two elements being contrasted are often opposites, but not always. The most commonly recognized type of rhetorical contrast is antithesis, a figure of speech that juxtaposes two opposing ideas, often using parallelism to emphasize their difference. It is a contrast between two different, sometimes opposite, ideas. An example of an antithesis is the following: “Love is an active feeling, hate is a passive one.” Antithesis is often used to make a point or to bring a sharp contrast to a piece of writing. The second type of contrast is chiasmus, which is when the initial grammatical structure of two phrases is reversed upon repetition. Chiasmus is often used for humorous or dramatic effect. An example of chiasmus is “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Chiasmus is used in this example to contrast the two experiences of a particular time period. Finally, we have oxymoron, which is a figure of speech that combines two words of contradicting meanings. I
