Solar energy is considered a renewable source because using it does not decrease the energy of the sun in any measurable way. The sun provides energy that plants need to carry out photosynthesis, which is their way of making food. Animals that eat those plants thus get their energy indirectly from the sun. The same is true for the animals that eat those animals. The energy in the plants and animals that form fossil fuels comes from the sun. Solar radiation is responsible for wind and for the rain that flows into rivers (whose waters might be captured by a hydroelectric plant).
