My twenty-year-old son Aaron is a biology/pre-med major at Morehouse College in Atlanta and at the time of the text was a rising junior. But the “here” referenced in his text wasn’t Morehouse; it was Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He was there for a ten-week summer internship. Why? What’s wrong? I texted back. I’m frustrated… I’m wasting my time here. I wrote back. Let’s talk about it. But he responded, It’s gonna have to wait till later. I remember how helpless I felt as I ended the exchange. Okay. Keep the faith, son. Things happen for a reason. From previous conversations, I fully understood his angst. Aaron’s experiments exploring the connection between fructose and hypertension weren’t going well. He couldn’t figure out what he was doing wrong. His repeated requests for in-house assistance left him feeling incompetent and further confused. His feelings of isolation and his inability to bond with the other research students compounded the already precarious state of his emotions. Plus, I suspected a recent encounter at a science conference had chipped away at my son’s self-esteem. A couple of attendees implied that students from historically black colleges and universities (HBCSs), like my son, were not as intellectually gifted as those who attended other institutions of higher learning. The emotion I heard in Aaron’s voice every time he mentioned the incident suggested the instigators had succeeded in making him doubt his ability and his academic choices.
