An assay on “Araby” Araby is one of the short story in James Joyce ’s book Dubliners . and this book is told from the perspective of a little boy. Also Dublin is the hometown of Joyce. And the story opens on North Richmond Street in Dublin, where an uninhabited house of two stories stood at the blind end, detached from its neighbors in a square ground. And the young boy lived with his uncle and aunt, in loved with his friend Mangan ’s sister, everyday he want to talk with his sister and think about her all the day . but when the dream comes true ,he was nervous, tongue-tied and cannot answer her question , but when she tells him that she cannot go with because of a retreat that week in her convent, he promises to go and bring her a gift from the bazaar. But in the end he didn ’t buy anything and thinks that he is a creature driven and derided by vanity and his eyes burned with anguish and anger. In this story, we can identify the narrator as a grow-up man, and was recalling his childhood. And our main character “Araby, a boy just on the verge of adolescence. Fall in love with his friend ’s sister, but I think his sister doesn’t take it serious, and from the first paragraph we can see Araby ’s is lived with his relative, instead of his parents so we can say that he lacks relation between parents and children. In some way the boy is desire for love and care. So he can fall in love so easily. And from the fourth paragraph, “Every morning I lay on the floor in the front parlo r watching her door.” We can say that the living standard of his family wasn ’t very good and he already be accustomed to it. And we can drew a conclusion from analysis his friend’s sister, a beautiful young and polite girl the boy has loved was just a symbolizes hope, symbolize the good life and love and care that he lack of.
