   1 Overview: As governments are pushed to achieve increasingly tighter energy targets, the use of inefficient lighting is one area that is receiving attention. One good example of this is the recent initiative the Australian Government has taken by banning the use of incandescent lamps by 2010. While this is a world first, it won’t be long before other countries start to take a similar stance. Incandescent lamps have been with us now for over 125 years and have changed little in that time. Recent developments in Compact Fluorescent (CFL) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting however, is starting to change all this. In keeping with these trends, IHG strongly supports the use of these newer technologies and the basic strategy adopted in these guidelines revolves around changing guestroom incandescent lamps to LED and compact fluorescent. The guidelines that follow have been developed to assist our IHG branded hotels to meet the changing trends while at the same time saving on energy. If done properly, significant savings can be attained without taking anything away from the guest experience. Of course, it is understood that the existing setup in some hotels rooms may
