Unit 8 Green Living Lesson 3 White Bikes on the Road
Aim:
To introduce students to the concept of sustainable transportation and the benefits of cycling.
Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Define the term sustainable transportation.
Identify the benefits of cycling as a form of sustainable transportation.
Discuss the challenges and solutions to promoting cycling in urban areas.
Plan and participate in a group cycling activity.
Materials:
Whiteboard and markers
Projector and computer
Handouts on sustainable transportation and cycling
Bicycles and safety equipment (helmets, lights, etc.) for the group cycling activity
Warm-up:
The teacher will start the class by asking students to brainstorm different modes of transportation and their advantages and disadvantages. This will lead into a discussion of sustainable transportation and the benefits of cycling.
Presentation:
The teacher will introduce the concept of sustainable transportation and the benefits of cycling as a form of sustainable transportation. The teacher will show a video on the white bikes project in Amsterdam and discuss how this project promotes sustainable transportation.
Practice:
The teacher will lead a class discussion on the challenges and solutions to promoting cycling in urban areas. Students will work in groups to brainstorm ways to promote cycling in their local area. Each group will present their ideas to the class.
Application:
The teacher will organize a group cycling activity in which students will plan and participate in a cycling tour of their local area. Students will be required to wear safety equipment and follow cycling rules and regulations.
Assessment:
The teacher will assess students understanding of sustainable transportation and the benefits of cycling through their participation in class discussion and their participation in the group cycling activity.
