英语硕士学术论文引言的体裁分析的中期报告 Introduction In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the analysis of the genres and registers of academic writing, particularly in the field of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) (Bhatia, 2004; Swales, 1990). These studies have focused on the analysis of the rhetorical and linguistic features of specific genres, such as research articles (Hyland, 2004), discussion sections (Shaw, 2010), and literature reviews (Groom Kinniburgh, 2016). However, there has been limited research on the analysis of the rhetorical and linguistic features of the introduction section of English masters academic theses. The introduction section in academic theses plays a crucial role in establishing the purpose of the research, outlining the structure of the thesis, and providing the readers with a background on the topic (Paltridge, 2004). In addition, the introduction section serves as a means of bridging the gap between the writers research and the existing knowledge in the field (Swales, 1990). Despite the significance of the introduction section in academic writing, little is known about its rhetorical and linguistic features in masters level English academic theses. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the growing body of research on the rhetorical and linguistic features of the introduction section in English academic theses. This study aims to analyze the introduction section of twenty masters level English academic theses, written by non-native English-speaking students in a Chinese university. The study will use a multi-dimensional approach to analyze the rhetorical and linguistic features of the introduction section, which includes the identification of communicative purpose, the analysis of rhetorical moves, the examination of stance-taking expressions, and the investigation of lexical and grammatical features. The findings of this study will contribute to our understanding of the rhetorical and linguistic features of the introduction
