Research Report on English Cosmetic Instructions Translation from the Perspective of Adaptation Theory
Introduction
The English cosmetic instructions translation has been a popular research topic in the field of translation studies. Based on adaptation theory, this study aims to explore the translation strategies and techniques of English cosmetic instructions translation from the perspective of adaptation theory.
Literature Review
Adaptation theory, originally proposed by French anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss, is a theory that emphasizes the importance of adaptation in cultural exchanges and interactions. From the perspective of adaptation theory, translation is regarded as an act of cultural adaptation. According to this theory, a good translation not only conveys the meanings of the original text but also adapts to the cultural and linguistic context of the target language. Previous studies have applied adaptation theory to various fields, including film translation, advertising translation, and medical translation.
Methodology
In this study, a corpus of English cosmetic instructions was collected, including product descriptions, usage instructions, and warnings. The corpus was analyzed from the perspectives of linguistic adaptation and cultural adaptation. Linguistic adaptation refers to the adjustment of linguistic structures, while cultural adaptation refers to the adaptation of cultural references and values.
Results
Based on the analysis of the corpus, several translation strategies and techniques were identified for English cosmetic instructions translation from the perspective of adaptation theory. These strategies include cultural substitution, cultural amplification, cultural reduction, and cultural neutralization.
