By sortin and reviewing the history of research on the Western Thousand—Buddha Grottoes in the first half of the 20th century , this pa ­ per discusses the earliest known records of academic investigation regardin the history , transportation , cave structure , style , datin , contents , and inscriptions of the site. On the basis of this research , the article attempts to restore the Western Thousand—Buddha Grottoes to its original position as one of the most significant Buddhist archeological sites in China and propose new directions for future research .
