Title: The Application of English Movies in English Major Listening Teaching: A Mid-Term Report
Introduction:
English movies have become an increasingly popular tool for teaching listening skills in English major courses. However, the effectiveness of using movies as a listening teaching material needs further examination. Hence, this report presents a mid-term analysis of the application of English movies in an English major listening class.
Methodology:
A group of English major students from a Chinese university were selected to participate in the study. Six English movies were used as teaching materials during the first half of the semester. The students listening abilities were tested before and after movies-watching. The listening test consisted of two parts: multiple-choice questions and summary writing based on the content of the movies. The data were analyzed based on the pre-and post-test scores.
Results:
Results showed a significant improvement in the students listening comprehension after watching movies. The average listening scores of the post-test were significantly higher than those of the pre-test. Moreover, students subjective evaluation of using movies as a teaching material was generally positive. They enjoyed watching movies and felt that it helped them to improve their listening abilities.
Discussion:
The results suggest that movies can be a useful tool for teaching listening skills in English major courses. Watching movies can provide an authentic listening environment that exposes students to various accents, intonations, and vocabulary. Furthermore, movies can help students to understand the culture and customs of English-speaking countries, which is important for language learning.
Conclusion:
Based on the mid-term results, the use of English movies as a teaching material can be an effective way of improving listening skills in English major courses. However, further research is needed to analyze the long-term effect
