Pompeii Pompeii is an ancient Italian city on the Bay of Naples. Founded in the 7th century BC by a tribe called the Oscans, it was later taken over by the Romans in the first century, and became a prosperous city until completely buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
Around the end of the first century AD, a Roman writer called Pliny wrote about a terrible volcanic eruption that he had witnessed as a young man. This particularly sad event left a deep impression on Pliny who lived in Misenum at that time. Thanks to him, we can know more about this disaster, but at that time, few people believed his word about it until the city’s rediscovery.
This volcanic eruption made Pompeii a time capsule, a frozen moment in history. The eruption buried Pompeii under 4 to 6 meters of ash and pumice, and the long-forgotten site of the city was rediscovered in 1748 and has been excavated (挖掘) since that time. Now, four fifths of the city has been discovered.
