Mid-term Report of the Study on English Learning Anxiety among Vocational College Students
Introduction:
English is an essential language in the globalized world. However, many vocational college students in China are facing challenges in learning English due to various reasons, including lack of English materials, unequipped language laboratories, and deficient teaching quality. Moreover, English learning anxiety is a common issue that further adds to the difficulty of learning a foreign language. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the factors that contribute to English learning anxiety among vocational college students in China and to suggest practical solutions to address the issue.
Methodology:
This study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 50 vocational college students from different majors in China. The interviews were conducted in Chinese, allowing the students to express their concerns without language barriers. Qualitative data analysis was used to identify the themes and patterns related to English learning anxiety.
Findings:
The findings of this study suggest that vocational college students face various factors contributing to English learning anxiety. These include:
1. Lack of confidence: Many students lack confidence in their English abilities, feeling overwhelmed by the volume of materials and the complexity of the language.
2. Fear of failure: Fear of failure and embarrassment in front of peers and teachers hinder students from speaking English freely.
3. Limited resources: Limited English resources, such as up-to-date textbooks and audio-visual aids, contribute to difficulty in learning.
4. Time constraints: Vocational college students are often busy with multiple tasks, leaving little time for English study.
Solutions:
Based on the findings, several solutions can be proposed to address English learning anxiety among vocational college students, including:
