VMware Announces Enhanced Version of VMware FT Background At their recently held VMworld 2014 Conference VMware announced the public beta of vSphere 6.0, the latest edition of their flagship virtualization tform. When available in the first half 2015, Version 6.0 will lude a number of enhancements luding the long-promised multi-core capability for their fault-tolerant VMware FT feature. Announcement Facts While the announcement of the multi-core version of FT was relatively short on details we’ve been able to confirm the following facts: • The original record-re y solution has been re ced with a fast check-pointing architecture. • Users can configure a node with up to eight vCPUs supporting four FT-protected VMs and four vCPUs per VM. Whichever limit is hit first is the um. Examples of supported configurations lude a node with two VMs each with four vCPUs or four VMs each with two vCPUs. VMware believes that such a solution will allow them to satisfy 90% of the application loads that require a fault-tolerant product. • Configuration limits can be overridden by the user, but should be done with the understanding that they do so at their own risk. Creating a node with more than four vCPUs per VM is an unsupported configuration and should something go wrong, VMware is under no obligation to accept a service call. • Each protected VM will support a um of 64GB of memory. • Configurations will require a dedicated 10G work connection and a shared storage device to a a tie-breaker when a failure occurs. • While there have been reports in the press that VMware anticipates performance overhead of 10 to 30% on the product, these are unofficial numbers.
