ActivityCostEstimatesareavaluableprojectmanagementtoolfordeterminingthecostsforaproject.Muchlikehowaproject’sworkisbrokendownintoactivitiesandworkpackages,theactivitycostestimatebreakstheproject’scostsdowntotheactivitylevelinordertoimprovethereliabilityandaccuracyoftheestimate.

Theactivitycostestimateconsiderseachprojectactivityandthecostsassociatedwithcompletingtheactivity.Thesecostsincludedirectcostsforprojectresources,indirectcostswhichmaybepassedontotheproject,andtheamountheldincontingencyreservefortheactivity.Agivenactivitymayhavemanyresourcesallocatedtoitwhichallmustbeaccountedforaspartoftheestimateforthatactivity.

Onecharacteristicoftheactivitycostestimateisdocumentinghowtheestimatewasdetermined.Thisisusuallydonebyeitheranalogousorparametricestimating.Analogousestimatingisdoneusingsimilarpastprojectsoractivitiestoestimatecost.Parametricestimatingisdonebydeterminingandusingaunitcostcalculatedoveradurationorquantityofunits.Parametricestimatingisusuallymoreaccurateandshouldresultinahigherconfidencelevel.

Anothercharacteristicoftheactivitycostestimateisthatitoftenusesarangefortheactivity’scostestimateaswellasaconfidencelevel.Atdifferentstagesofprojectplanningsomeactivitiesmaybemorewell-definedwhichmayresultinamuchhigherconfidencelevelthanthatofanactivitywithmoreunknowns.Itisimportanttonotethatlikemostprojectmanagementdocumentation,theactivitycostestimateshouldcontinuetoberevisedandimprovedthroughouttheproject’slifecycle.
