noexception.Buttheargumentsaboutpopulationarecomplicated,asthefollowing

discussionillustrates.

EvenifMexicospopulationreaches125millionbytheyear2010,itspopulation

densityisstillsmallerthanthe1985populationdensityofsome50countries.By

internationalstandardsMexicowillstillnotbeoverpopulatedbytheyear2010.If

wealthisgeneratedbypeople,themoreindividualsthereare,thegreaterthewealth

thatpotentiallycouldbegenerated.WhyshouldMexicocontrolitspopulationat

densitylevelsbelowthoseoftherichercountriesifmorepopulationrepresentsthe

possibilityofgeneratingmorewealth?

Ontheotherhand,itisoftenpointedoutthatoncesustainability(支撑力)limits

arenearorarereached,therearedecreasingproductivitygains(or,perhapsmore

accurately,increasingproductivelosses),andpeoplebecomeacostratherthanan

asset.Ifweassumethattherearesustainabilitylimitsandthatwearecloseto

reachingtheselimitsataworldlevel,thenitisappropriatetocheckpopulation

growth.
