Description

Forabout30years,theMuseumofScienceEyeOpenerProgramhasbeenworkingwiththeBostonPublicSchoolstobringtheexcitingworldofsciencetosecondgradestudentsfromacrossthecity.Eachyear,about3,000studentsfromover45Bostonschoolsvisitthemuseumtoexplore,askquestionsandfindanswers.Since1986,fundsfromtheGermeshausenFamilyFoundationhavesupportedtheEyeOpenerPrograminprovidingaguidedmuseumexperienceforsecondgraders.

Withthehelpofalargecorpsofvolunteers,theprogramintroducesthesestudentstothemuseumandgivesthemachancetoengageinscience.EyeOpenervolunteersencourageexplorationandtheexcitementofdiscoveryastheysharethemuseumwiththechildren.Theyachievethesegoalsthroughconversation,hands-onexperiments,explorationofexhibits,andPracticingscientificthinkingskillswithprogramparticipants.

Responsibilities

EachTuesdaymorning,thestudentsaregroupedintosetsof4to6withapairofvolunteerswhogivethematourofthemuseum.Tourslastabouttwohoursandaretailoredtotheinterestsofthestudents.

Learnthelay-outofthemuseumtoshareandexplorewithsecondgraderstheexhibitswhichMaybeinterestingtothem.

Encouragechildrentoobserve,compare,describe,askquestionsandshareideas.

Knowmuseumemergenceandsafetyprocedures.

Workinclosecollaborationwithadiversegroupofvolunteers.
