Inthischapterwelookatshippingeconomicsfromtheperspectiveoftheindividual
shippingcompany.Everycompanyfacesthechallengeofnavigatingitswaythroughthe
successionofbooms,recessionsanddepressionswhichcharacterizetheshipping
market.Duringprosperousperiodswhenfundsfloodin,itmustmeetthechallengeof
investingwiselyforfuturegrowthandacommercialreturnoncapital.Theseedsof
futureproblemsareoftensownundertheheadyinfluenceofmarketsentimentatthe
peakofacycle.Inrecessionsthechallengeistokeepcontrolofthebusinesswhenthe
marketistryingtoforcesurpluscapacityoutofthesystembysqueezingcashflowand
takeadvantageoftheopportunities.Duringtheseperiodstheshippingmarketislikea
marathonraceinwhichonlyalimitednumberofentrantsareallowedtofinish.Therace
hasnofixedlength,itgoesonlapafterlapuntilenoughcompetitorsdropoutfrom
exhaustion,leavingthesurvivingrunnerstopickuptheprizes.
