HighPeaktoPeakcommonmodevoltage–
Typically20to120voltspeaktopeak(10to60voltspeak).The
waveformimageshowsthecapacitivecoupledcommonmodevoltage
ontheshaftofthemotor.The“six-step”waveformistheresultofthe3
phasesofpulsesfromtheVFD.Thetimingofthepulsewidthmodulation
(PWM)pulsestothemotorfromthedrivedetermineswhatthe
waveformlookslike.Sometimesitwilllooklikeasquarewave.
Thissix-steporsquarewaveiswhatisseenwhenthereisnobearing
dischargeandthepeaktopeakshaftvoltageisatitsmaximumlevel.
Thevoltagelevelmayeventuallyovercomethedielectricinnon-
isolatedbearingsandbegindischarging.
HighamplitudeEDMdischargepattern–
TypicallyEDMdischargescanoccurfrom20to80voltspeaktopeak
(10to40voltspeak)dependingonthemotor,thetypeofbearing,the10-40voltspeak
ageofthebearing,andotherfactors.Thewaveformimageshowsan(typical)
increaseinvoltageontheshaftandthenasharpverticallineindicating
avoltagedischarge.Thiscanoccurthousandsoftimesinasecond,
basedonthecarrierfrequencyofthedrive.Thesharpverticaldischarge
atthetrailingedgeofthevoltageisanultrahighfrequencydv/dtwith
atypical“dischargefrequency”of1to125MHz(basedontesting
resultsinmanyapplications).
