Inthecustomarydescriptionofturbulence,therearealwaysmoreunknowns

thanequations.Thisiscalledtheclosureproblem;atpresent,thegapcanbe

closedonlywithmodelsandestimatesbasedonintuitionandexperience.For

anewcomertoturbulence,thereisyetanotherclosureproblem:several

dozenintroductorytextsingeneralfluiddynamicsexist,butthegapbetween

theseandthemonographsandadvancedtextsinturbulenceiswide.This

bookisdesignedtobridgethesecondclosureproblembyintroducingthe

readertothetoolsthatmustbeusedtobridgethefirst.

Abasictoolofturbulencetheoryisdimensionalanalysis;itisalwaysused

inconjunctionwithanappealtotheideathatturbulentflowsshouldbe

independentoftheReynoldsnumberiftheyarescaledproperly.Thesetools
