Introduction

Frommastercraftsmenofthenineteenthcenturytofactoryworkersofthetwentiethcentury

andnowtotheartificialintelligence-enableddigitalworkersandrobotsofthetwenty-first

century,theworldofworkhascomealongway.Coupledwithglobalizationand

demographicchanges,digitaltechnologieshaveradicallyalteredthewaywelive,work,

conductbusiness,andcommunicate.Intheprocess,theyaredissolvingtheboundaries

betweenin-houseandexternalworkers,worktimeandpersonaltime,workdevicesand

personaldevices,workplaceandpersonalspace,andbetweenorganizations,customersand

suppliers.Intheworldofartificialintelligenceandrobotics,machinesnotonlydothework

thathumansdo,theyhavealsostarteddoingthe‘thinkingwork’(Phan,WrightandLee,
