Aswellaslookingattypicallocalinctionsbetweenneuronsinthenerveringthe
completenessoftheinformationinthedatabaseallowsustoinvestigatethelarge
scalestructureoftheneuralcircuitry.Wecanasksuchquestionsas:whatisthe
processingdepthfromsensoryinputtomotoroutput,i.e.howmanyintermediary
neuronsarethere?,andtowhatextentisthecircuitryunidirectional,progressing
linearlyfrominputtooutput?Itisunlikelytobecompleydirectional;oneexpects
tofindacertainamountoffeedback,bothontrol-typecircuits,inogyto
electricalengineering,wherefeedbackcanbeusedtoadjustgainandbiastooptimise
theresponsetostimuli,andinrhythmicpatterngeneratorsiftheyexist.Infactthe
questionsofprocessingdepthanddirectionalityarerelated,seitisnecessaryto
haveorderedthecircuitdiagrambeforebeingabletocountthenumberof
intermediaryneuronsbetweensensoryinputatthetopandmotoroutputatthebottom.
Ishallthereforeconsiderfirsttheextenttowhichthecircuitdiagramcanbe
directionallyordered.
8.1Directionality
Letusconsiderthworkofchemicalsynapsesandignoregapjunctionsforthe
timebeingse,althoughtheycanberectifyinganddirectional,onecannotdetect
anydirectionalityfromelectronmicrographs.Theaimistoverticallyorderthe
neuronssothatasmanyaspossibleofthesynapsespointdownwards,withtheir
presynapticneuronabovethepostsynaticneuronintheordering.Thiswasdonewith
asortingalgorithmthatisdescribedintheappendix.
Infacttheoperationwascarriedoutwithcombineddataforneuronalclasses,rather
thanwiththeindividualcells,seallthemembersofthesameclassshouldoccupy
thesamefunctionalpositioninthecircuitry.Setheearlierysissuggestedthat
