1.Introduction
Mentholisanorganiccompoundmadesyntheticallyorobtainedfromcornmint,peppermintor
othermintoils.Itisawaxy,crystallinesubstance,clearorwhiteolor,withpepperminttaste
andodor,whichissolidatroomtemperatureandmeltsslightlyabove.Itsmeltingpointis41-43℃
andboilingpointis212℃.Mentholisslightlysolubleinwater;verysolubleinalcohol,
chloroform,ether;lysolubleinglacialaceticacid,liqpetrolatum.Ithaseightstereoisomersbut
naturalmentholexistsasonepurestereoisomer,nearlyalwaysthe(1R,2S,5R)form.

Mentholisoneoftheactivecomponentsinvolatileoilsofmanyherbalmedicines.Itshows
variouspharmacologicalactivitiesludinganti-infltory,gesic,anti-fungalandcentral
nervoussystemexcitationeffects.Ithasbeenusedforthetreatmentofcough,headaches,itch,
mycoticinfectionsandfordiaphoresis.Mentholysanimportantroleinmanytraditional
herbalmedicineswithessentialoils.
