Introduction

vClinicalstudiesandexperimentalevidencehavehighlightedthatmacrophages,

whicharerecognizedasprominentwhitebloodcellsincancer-related

inflammation,playafunctionalroleinsomehumantumorinitiationand

metastasis.

vClodronate,oneofthehalogenatedbisphosphonatesthatiscurrentlybeing

usedinoncology,wasfoundtohaveanti-tumoreffectandbeefficientin

preventingskeletal–relatedeventsinbreastcancerpatientswithbone

metastasis.

vThepoorprognosisofanaplasticthyroidcancer(ATC)isknowntobepartly

relatedtoearlymetastasesofthemalignancy,whicharenotsurgically

removableandareunresponsivetoconventionalchemotherapyor

radiotherapy.

vThelungsarethemostcommondistantmetastaticsiteofATC.

vSinceinflammationisoneofthekeymicroenvironmentsfortumor

initiation,macrophages,themostabundantinflammatorycelltypeinthe

lungs,mightplaycertainrolesinlungmetastasesinATC;however,these

roleshavenotbeenfullyelucidated.

vTheaimofthecurrentstudywastoevaluatetheeffectofpulmonary

macrophagesontheinitiationandprogressionoflungmetastasisofATC.
