bodyofliteratureproducedintheUnitedStatesbywritersofAfricandescent.
1.Characteristicsandthemes
Inbroadterms,African-Americanliteraturecanbedefinedaswritingsbypeople
ofAfricandescentlivingintheUnitedStates.Itishighlyvaried.African-American
literaturehasgenerallyfocusedontheroleofAfricanAmericanswithinthe
largerAmericansocietyandwhatitmeanstobeanAmerican.AllAfrican-
AmericanstudyspeakstothedeepermeaningoftheAfrican-American
presenceinthisnation.Thispresencehasalwaysbeenatestcaseofthenations
claimstofreedom,democracy,equality,theinclusivenessofall.African-
Americanliteratureexplorestheissuesoffreedomandequalitylongdeniedto
BlacksintheUnitedStates,alongwithfurtherthemessuchasAfricanAmerican
culture,racism,religion,slavery,asenseofhomeandmore.

1)EarlyAfricanAmericanliterature
AfricanAmericanhistorypredates早于theemergenceoftheUnitedStates
asanindependentcountry,andAfrican-Americanliteraturehassimilarly类似的

LucyTerryistheauthoroftheoldestknownpieceofAfrican-American
literature:BarsFight.Althoughwrittenin1746,thepoemwasnot
publisheduntil1855,whenitwasincludedinJosiahHollandsHistoryof
WesternMassachusetts.ThepoetPhillisWheatley(1753–84)publishedher
bookPoemsonVariousSubjectsin1773,threeyearsbeforeAmerican
independence.BorninSenegal,Wheatleywascapturedandsoldintoslavery
attheageofseven.BroughttoAmerica,shewasownedbyaBoston
merchant.Bythetimeshewassixteen,shehadmasteredhernewlanguage
ofEnglish.Herpoetrywaspraisedbymanyof
