Lonelinessisbadforyourhealth.So,inthesedaysofCOVID19,when

Onepartoftheansweristotrytounderstandthephysiology(生理)
ofthechange.
StevenColeoftheUniversityofCalifornia,LosAngeles,began
hisworkwithJohnCacioppooftheUniversityofChicago.They
addressedthatquestionbyrepeatedlyobservingsocialisolationin
individualvolunteers,whilesimultaneouslytrackingfrombloodsamples,
theirgeneexpressionpatternsandotherchangesintheirphysiology.
Theyfoundthat,initially,volunteersfeelingsofisolationare
relatedtoanincreaseintheirinflammationgenes(炎症基因)activity
whicharealsoknowntotravelintothebrainandpromoteanxiety.They
alsonotedthatincreasedlevelsinthiskindofbrainactivityinturn
improveinflammationandcausebehaviorssuchassocialwithdrawal,
feelingsofsuspiciontowardstheoutsideworldandatendencyto
actmoredefensivelybymakingdecisionsthatinvolvefewrisks.That,of
coursepromotesfurtherfeelingsofloneliness.Itseems,therefore,that
thoughlonelinessstartswithsolitude,itcanquicklytakeona
physiologicallifeofitsown.Therefore,dealingwiththeloneliness
causedbyenforcedisolationwillnotbeasimplematterofallowing
peopletosocializeonceagain.Insearchofthat,Dr.Colecarriedouta
seriesofexperimentsthatencouragedlonelypeopletodirectsimpleacts
ofkindnesstowardstheirfellowcreatures:thingslikebuyinggroceries
foranelderlyneighbourorhelpingacolleague.Thosedirectedtoshow
kindnesshadpreciselytheoppositeinflammationgenesactivitytothat
previouslyseeninthelonelybyDr.Cole.
