Israelhasnot,afterall,movedbeyondtheconflictthathashaunteditsincethecreationofthemodernstatein1948:theclaimsoftwopeoples,JewishandPalestinian,tothesamenarrowstripoflandbetweentheMediterraneanSeaandtheJordanRiver.

FormanyyearstheassumptionhadgrownwithinIsraelthatthePalestinianquestionhadbecomeanonissueandthatapolicyoftacticalprocrastination,asIsraelisettlementsintheWestBankgreweverlarger,wouldensurethatnoPalestinianstateevercameintobeing.

This,however,couldnothidetheelephantintheroom:thegrowingPalestinianfuryathumiliationandmarginalizationthathadalreadyledtoaspikeinWestBankviolencethisyear.

ThetemptationisclearlystrongforanoverwhelmingIsraelioffensivetomakesureHamasisneveragainabletomountsuchanoperation.ButinGaza,thepresenceofperhapsdozensofIsraelihostagesseizedbyHamasisadeeplycomplicatingfactor.ExecutionsofhostagesinresponsetoanIsraeliassaultwouldbecomeanexplosivedomesticpoliticalissue.
