“Grizzlybearsarere-occupyinglargeareasoftheirformer
range,”saysbearbiologistChrisServheen.Asgrizzlybears
expandtheirrangeintoplaceswheretheyhaventbeenseenina
centuryormore,theyreincreasinglybeingsightedbyhumans.
ThewesternhalfoftheU.S.wasfullofgrizzlieswhenEuropeans
came,witharoughnumberof50,000ormorelivingalongside
NativeAmericans.Bytheearly1970s,aftercenturiesofcrueland
continuoushuntingbysettlers,600to800grizzliesremainedon
amere2percentoftheirformerrangeintheNorthern
Rockies.In1975,grizzlieswerelistedundertheEndangered
SpeciesAct.
Today,thereareabout2,000ormoregrizzlybearsintheU.S.
TheirrecoveryhasbeensosuccessfulthattheU.S.Fishand
WildlifeServicehastwiceattemptedtode-listgrizzlies,which
wouldloosenlegalprotectionsandallowthemtobehunted.
Botheffortswereoverturnedduetolawsuitsfromconservation
groups.Fornow,grizzliesremainlisted.
Obviously,ifprecautions(预防)arenttaken,grizzliescan
becometroublesome,sometimeskillingfarmanimalsorwalking
throughyardsinsearchoffood.Ifpeopleremovefoodand
attractantsfromtheiryardsandcampsites,grizzlieswilltypically
passbywithouttrouble.Puttingelectricfencingaroundchicken
housesandotherfarmanimalquartersisalsohighlyeffectiveat
