Tounderstandthelinkbetweensleepandlanguage,let’sstartwithjustonelanguage:yourown.Youmaythinkyoumasteredyournativelanguagelongago,butyouareactuallystillconstantlyupdatingit.Evenadultsstilllearnaboutonenewwordeverytwodaysintheirmothertongue.

It’sduringsleepthattheintegrationofoldandnewknowledgehappens.Duringtheday,ourhippocampus,whichspecialisesinabsorbinginformationquickly,soaksupnewwords.Atnight,itpassesthenewinformationontootherpartsofthebrain,whereitcanbestoredandconnectedtootherrelevantinformation.

MatthieuKoroma,apost-doctoralresearcherattheUniversityofLiègeinBelgium,whospecialisesinsleepandcognition,co-authoredanumberofstudiesthataddtothisnuancedpictureofhowandwhenweengagewithlanguageinoursleep.

“Basically,themessageisthatyouareabletolearnwordsinotherlanguagesduringsleep,evennewlanguagesyouneverheardbefore,butyoudoitinaverydifferentwaythanwhenyouareawake,”hesays.

Doesallthismeanwecaneffortlesslylearnalanguageinoursleep,aslongasweplayalanguagelessonallnightlong?

Notnecessarily.Itmightactuallybackfire,bydisturbingyourrest,Koromasays.Healsopointsoutthatinthestudy,participantslearnedthewordsmuchfasterwhentheywereawakethanwhentheywereasleep:“It’swaymoreefficientwhenyou’reawake.”
