years.
3EveryChristmas,anenvelopewithaNorthPolestamparrived.Itwas
addressedtoTolkien’schildren.Whocoulditbefrom?Thechildrenmusthave
beenveryexcitedastheyopenedit.Inside,theywouldfindahandwrittenletter
fromFatherChristmas.Theletterswerealsobeautifullyillustrated—eachmust
havetakenitstrueauthor,Tolkien,alongtimetocomplete.
4TheletterstoldwonderfulstoriesaboutFatherChristmas’slifeand
adventuresattheNorthPole.AregularcharacterintheletterswasPolarBear,
whoonceclimbedtheNorthPole(anactualpoleinthiscase)andfellthrough
theroofofFatherChristmas’shouse.Inanotherletter,FatherChristmas
complainedabouthowhecouldnotstophishelpersplayinggameswiththe
toysinsteadofwrappingthemup.Interestingly,thelettersdidnotcontainthe
usualwarningstochildrenthattheymightnotreceivetheirpresentsifthey
werenotgood.Thelettersdid,however,changeasTolkien’s
