Ninety-fourpercentofsurveyedcentralbanksareexploringacentralbankdigital

currency(CBDC).Thesurveysuggeststhatcentralbanksareproceedingattheirown

speed,takingdiverseapproachesandconsideringdifferentdesignfeatures.Overthe

courseof2023,therehasbeenasharpuptickinexperimentsandpilotswithwholesale

CBDCs–mainlyinadvancedeconomies(AEs),butvariousemergingmarketand

developingeconomies(EMDE)alsosteppeduptheirwholesaleCBDCwork.Overall,the

likelihoodthatcentralbankswillissueawholesaleCBDCwithinthenextsixyearsnow

exceedsthelikelihoodthattheywillissuearetailCBDC.Centralbanksfurtherenhanced

theirengagementwithstakeholderstoinformCBDCdesign.ManyCBDCfeaturesare

stillundecided.Yet,interoperabilityandprogrammabilityareoftenconsideredfor
