UnexpectedEducationofTwoSocietyGirlsintheWestby
DorothyWickenden,whoisamagazineeditorandDorothy

Whydidtheygothen?Well,theywantedtodosomething
useful.Soon,however,theyrealizedwhattheyhad
undertaken.
Theymovedinwithalocalfamily,theHarrisons,and,
likethem,hadlittleprivacy,rarebaths,andablanketof
snowontheirquiltwhentheywokeupinthemorning.Some
mornings,RosamondandDorothywouldarriveatthe
schoolhousetofindthechildrenweepingfromthecold.In
spring,thesnowwasreplacedbymudoverice.
InWickendensbook,sheexpandedonthehistoryofthe
Westandalsoonfeminism,whichofcourseinfluencedthe
girlsdecisiontogotoElkhead.Ahair-raisingsection
concernsthebuildingoftherailroads,whichentailed(牵
涉)drillingthroughtheRockies,ofteninblinding
snowstorms.ThebookendswithRosamondandDorothys
returntoAuburn.
Wickendenisaverygoodstoryteller.Thesweepofthe
landandthestoicism(坚忍)ofthepeoplemovehertosome
beautifulwriting.HereisapictureofDorothyWoodruff,
onherhorse,lookingdownfromahilltop:Whenthesun
slippedbehindthemountains,itshedarosyglowall
aroundthem.Thenafullmoonrose.Thesnowwasmarked
onlybysmallanimals:foxes,coyotes,mice,andvarying
hares,whichturnedwhiteinthewinter.
