SmithCollege.Theyworeexpensiveclothes.Soforthemto
movetoElkhead,Colo.toinstructthechildrenwhoseshoes
wereheldtogetherwithstringwasasurprise.Theirstay
inElkheadisthesubjectofNothingDaunted:The
UnexpectedEducationofTwoSocietyGirlsintheWestby
DorothyWickenden,whoisamagazineeditorandDorothy
Woodruffsgranddaughter.
Whydidtheygothen?Well,theywantedtodosomething
useful.Soon,however,theyrealizedwhattheyhad
undertaken.
Theymovedinwithalocalfamily,theHarrisons,and,
likethem,hadlittleprivacy,rarebaths,andablanketof
snowontheirquiltwhentheywokeupinthemorning.Some
mornings,RosamondandDorothywouldarriveatthe
schoolhousetofindthechildrenweepingfromthecold.In
spring,thesnowwasreplacedbymudoverice.
InWickendensbook,sheexpandedonthehistoryofthe
Westandalsoonfeminism,whichofcourseinfluencedthe
girlsdecisiontogotoElkhead.Ahair-raisingsection
concernsthebuildingoftherailroads,whichentailed（牵
涉）drillingthroughtheRockies,ofteninblinding
snowstorms.ThebookendswithRosamondandDorothys
returntoAuburn.
Wickendenisaverygoodstoryteller.Thesweepofthe
landandthestoicism（坚忍）ofthepeoplemovehertosome
beautifulwriting.HereisapictureofDorothyWoodruff,
onherhorse,lookingdownfromahilltop:Whenthesun
slippedbehindthemountains,itshedarosyglowall
aroundthem.Thenafullmoonrose.Thesnowwasmarked
onlybysmallanimals:foxes,coyotes,mice,andvarying
hares,whichturnedwhiteinthewinter.
