nighttheyheartheirstepmotherploingtoleadthemintoandabandonthem.Hanselsneaks
outsideandcollectswhitepebbles,andthenextdayheleavesasecrettrailwhichhelpsthetwotofind
theirwayhome.Thefollowingnight,however,Hanselfindsthehousedoorlocked;thisime,whenthey
areledinto,heleavesatrailofbreadcrumbs,butthecrumbsarealleatenbybirds.
Thechildrenstumbleuponahousemadeofgingerbreadandcandy.Anuglyoldwomanwelcomesthem,
buttheysoondiscoverthatsheisawitch.SheimprisonsHanselinashed,planningtocookandeathim.
However,Greteltricksthewitchintoclimbingintoherownoven,killingherandseingHanselfree.The
childrencollectjewelsfromthewitch’shouseandmaketheirwayhome,wheretheyfindtheirstepmother
isgone.Withthejewels,fatherandchildrencanlivehappilyeveraterandneverbehungryagain.

studyoftheGermanlanguage,publishingthese“Children’sandHouseholdTales”in1812-14.Thestories
werepublishedas“Children’sandHouseholdTales”,originallybetween1812-1814,butthebrothers
toaddstoriesandadaptexisingonesunil1857.
