dominantmovementinUnitedStatespaintinginthelate1940sandthe1950s.AndI

saidthattheartistsinvolvedsharedaspiritofrevoltagainsttraditionandabeliefin

spontaneousfreedomofexpression.Thissignificantartmovementisknownas

AbstractExpressionism.

Now,AbstractExpressionismiskindofhardtodefine,butit-it’sbasicallyanattempt

bytheartisttoconveymeaningorfeelinginanabstractway.So,theartistsdidn’t

worryaboutwhethertheywerepaintingfamiliarsubjectmatter,likethekindsof

thingsyou’dseeintheworldaroundyou.They’dpaint...well,abstractthings,on,ah,

ahugecanvas—whichitselfwasabreakfromtraditionaltechnique.Anditwas

commonamongartiststoapplythepainttothecanvasveryrapidlyandwithgreat

force.Solet’slookattheworkofthemostfamousAmericanAbstractExpressionist,

JacksonPollock.

TherewasnothinginJacksonPollock’strainingasanartistthatsuggestedhewould

cometobeseenassomesortofartisticrevolutionary.Inthe1930shestudied

drawingandpaintingattheArtStudentsLeague,apopularartschoolinNewYork

City.Whathedidlater—inthe1940s—wasastartlinginnovation.JacksonPollock

usedatechnique,thesocalled“pouranddrip”technique,forwhichheisbest

known.Hedidn’tusethetraditionaleasel—helaidhiswall-sizecanvasflatonthe

floor,sohecouldmovearounditandworkitfromallsides.Thenhepouredand

drippedhispaintontothecanvaswithouttouchingitwithabrush—justpouredand

dripped.
