Professor:OK,let’slookattwospecificancientculturesofthearctic,bothofwhichlivedonthefarnorthernedgeofthecontinent,theDorsetandtheThule.TheDorsetculturebeganaroundeighthundredBCandrangedtocrossmostofarcticCanada.TheThule,well,theylivedinthesamearea,butabouttwelvehundredyearslater.Bothgroupsleftsomebeautifulartbehind,reallyarebestevidencethatthesefolksevenexisted.Andalthoughthesetwocultureslivedinthesameregion,eachgroupapproachedtheirartinverydifferentways.

Alright,sotheDorsetculture.ArchaeologistshaveunearthedhundredsofDorsetsculpturesmostlycarvefromivoryorboneandsometimesstone.Theyweremostlysmallsculpturesofanimalorhumanfigures.Andourbestguessisthattheywereprobablyusedmainlyforreligiouspurposes.ThemainsubjectofDorsetanimalsculpturesisthepolarbear.Someofthesepolarbearsarerepresentedinnaturalisticorrealisticways,butusually,theirabstractedorstylizedthatistosaylessrealistic.Hereisatypicalpolarbearsculpture.Itscarvedfromivory,wecalltheseartifactsflyingorfloatingpolarbears,because,becausetheylooklikethepolarbearsdoingjustthatflyingorfloating.Noticethedistinctivemarkings,theyseemtomarkouttheskeletonorjointsofthebear.

Whilepolarbearswerefavoritesubject,theDorsetcreatedsculpturesofotheranimalstoo,likesealsandcaribouwhichwererepresentedinamorerealisticfashion.WespeculatethatiftheDorsetfearedorrespectedaparticularanimal,theyweremorelikelytopresentitinastylizedway,likewiththepolarbear,which,ofcourse,isalargedangerouspredat
