ThousandsofcherrytreesbloomaroundthewatersoftheTidalBasin(潮汐湖)，whichreflectthetrees’images.Thebasinwascreatedinthelate1800stopreventthePotomacRiverfromflooding.TheoriginalcherrytreeswereagiftfromJapan.OnMarch26,1912，morethan3,000cherrytreesarrivedinWashington.MostwereplantedaroundtheTidalBasin.ButcherrytreeswerealsoplantedneartheWashingtonMonumentandtheWhiteHouse.

MikeLitterst，aspokespersonfortheU．S.NationalParkService，whichmaintainstheWestPotomacPark，helpsprotectthecherrytrees.“Thiswonderfulgiftisover100yearsoldnowand，ifyouwill，thegiftkeepsongiving.Youcanenjoyitsbeautyeveryyear.”

Thecherryblossomsalsoserveasasymbolofthebeginningofspringtime.Everyyear，Washingtoncelebratesthearrivalofspringwithatwo-weekCherryBlossomFestival.Morethan1.5millionpeoplefromaroundtheworldvisitthenation’scapitalduringthefestival.Theyallhopetoseethecherrytreesattheir“peakbloom”，whichlastsseveraldayseachyear.ExpertsbeginmakingpeakbloompredictionsinFebruary.VisitorsmaketheirtravelplanstoWashingtonbasedonthesepredictions.Lastyear，officialscorrectlypredictedthepeakbloomsixweeksinadvance.Butthisyear，unpredictableweatherinMarchinWashingtonhasmadeguessingitdifficult.“Peakbloom”dateshavechangedmanytimes.
