Abstract

Structuredesignistheselectionofmaterialsandmembertype,size,and

configurationtocarryloadsinasafeandserviceablefashion.Ingeneral,structural

designimpliestheengineeringofstationaryobjectssuchasbuildingsandbridges,or

objectsthatmaybemobilebuthavearigidshapesuchasshiphullsandaircraft

frames.Deviceswithpartsplannedtomovewithrelationtoeachother(linkages)are

generallyassignedtotheareaofmechanical.

cyclesofanalysisandredesign.Often,severalalternativedesignswillprovequite

closeincost,strength,andserviceability.Thestructuralengineer,owner,orenduser

wouldthenmakeaselectionbasedonotherconsiderations.
