3.5.3Cords,ribbonsandpartsusedasties
3.5.3.1Rationale
Cords,ribbonsandpartsusedastiesmayformanintegralpartofproducts,forexampleforcords,ribbons
andpartsusedastiesonsoftarticlesdesignedtobeattachedtootherproducts.Leashesmaybeusedto
attachproductstothechild’sclothing.Strangulationcouldoccurwherecords,ribbonsandpartsusedasties
arelongenoughtowraparoundachild’sneck,theirlengthshouldthereforebecontrolled.Wherecordsand
ribbonsareusedfordecorativepurposesonly,theirlengthshouldbelimitedtoavoidastrangulationhazard.
Wheretwocords,ribbonsorpartsusedastiesareincloseproximitytoeachotherthereisthepotentialfor
thesetwocords,ribbonsorpartsusedastiestoformaclosedloop.However,toformaloopthetwofree
endsshouldbetiedtogetherandwhenthisisdoneitisunlikelythatthecircumferenceoftheloopismore
than360mm.
Wheretwocords,ribbonsorpartsusedastiesareincloseproximitythereisthepotentialforthemtogo
aroundtheneckinoppositedirectionsandthengettwistedtoformalooparoundtheneck.Althoughthisis
potentiallyhazardousitisconsideredtobeaverylowrisk.
Loopsthatarelargeenoughtopassoverachild’sheadcouldbecomeastrangulationhazard,their
circumferenceshouldthereforebecontrolled.
Monofilamentthreadsaremadeofasinglethreadofman-madefibre,whichareexceptionallystrongand
cannotbebrokenduringuse.Ifthesethreadsareusedinthemanufactureofchilduseandcarearticlesthere
isthepossibilitythatthethreadcanbecomewrappedaroundanypartofthechild’sbodysu
