home,Iturnedtonature.Ilearnedtheroutinesoflocalbirds–the
weaversthatflewfromkapoktrees,trailingfrondslikestreamers,
andthepairofvioletturacosthatwenttoroosteverydusk.
InSeptember2018,therainyseasonwasinfullflow.After
oneparticularlybadthunderstorm,Ifoundafledgling–a
bronze-wingedmannikinfinch–barelyamonthold,onthe
ground.Hewasabandonedbyhisflock,hisnestblownfromthe
mangotree.Hiseyesweretightlyshutandhewasshuddering,
tooyoungtosurvivealone.Hewasthesizeofmylittlefinger,
withfeathersthecolourofRichTeabiscuits,inkyeyesanda
smallbilllikeapencillead.Iplacedhiminacardboardboxwith
teatowels,mimickinganest,andstayedupallnight,
researchinghowtocareforhim.Ispoketoanexpertwhosaidit
wouldtake12weekstopreparehimforthewild.
