ThemethodusedbyCaltechsscientistsdependsonthewaywavesactwhentheymeet.Imaginetwowavescomingtogetherastheytravelinthesamedirection.Ifthetopsofthewaveslineup,theycombinetomakeabiggerwave.Butifthetopofonewavelinesupwiththelowpointoftheother,thewavescanceleachotherout.TheCaltechteamhasfoundawaytocontrolthetimingoflotsofmicrowavessothattheycancombinetheirpower,andfocustheenergyinonedirection.Itsalittlelikeusingamagnifying（放大的）glasstofocussunlightintoasmall,hotpointoflight.

Toprovethatthesystemcouldwork,MAPLEsentenergytotwodevicesjust30centimetersawayinspace.Thisenergywasthenturnedintoelectricity,whichmadetwosmalllightslightup.Next,MAPLEsentenergyallthewaydowntoalabatCaltech.Thescientistswereabletodetecttheenergy,provingthatitspossibletosendsolarenergytoEarthfromspace.

Dr.Hajimiri,oneoftheprojectsleaders,thinksthatoneday,thesystemcouldbeextremelyuseful,bringingenergytoplacesthatneedit,allovertheworld.Hebelievesthatinthefuture,wellbeabletosendenergytoremoteregionsandareasdestroyedbywarornaturaldisaster.
