Thedeathoflanguagesisnotanewphenomenon.Languagesusuallyhavearelativelyshortlifespanaswellasaveryhighdeathrate.Onlyafew,includingEgyptian,Chinese,Greek,Latin,havelastedmorethan2,000years.

Whatisnew,however,isthespeedatwhichtheyaredyingout.Europescolonialconquestscausedasharpdeclineinlinguisticdiversity,eliminatingatleast15percentofalllanguagesspokenatthetime.Overthelast300years,Europehaslostadozen,andAustraliahasonly20leftofthe250spokenattheendofthe18thcentury.

Theriseofnation-stateshasalsobeendecisiveinselectingandconsolidatingnationallanguagesandsideliningothers.Bymakinggreateffortstoestablishanofficiallanguageineducation,themediaandthecivilservice,nationalgovernmentshavedeliberatelytriedtoeliminateminoritylanguages.

Thisprocessoflinguisticstandardizationhasbeenboostedbyindustrializationandscientificprogress,whichhaveimposednewmethodsofcommunicationthatareswift,straightforwardandpractical.Languagediversitycametobeseenasa
