Therateoftripletandhigher-orderbirthsintheUSdeclined62%between1998and2023,accordingtoareportpublishedThursdaybytheUSCentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention.Andthelargestdeclinesinrateswereseenamongmothers30andolder.

Thisdeclineappearstobeassociatedwithhowguidancehasstrengthenedaroundthenumberofembryostransferredduringtheuseofassistedreproductivetechnologieslikeinvitrofertilization,knownasIVF,wrotetheresearchers,fromtheCDCsNationalCenterforHealthStatistics.

Couplesaremorelikelytohavetwins,tripletsormorebabiesinasinglepregnancywhenusingassistedreproductivetechnologybecausethesefertilitytreatmentsmayinvolvetransferringmultipleembryosintotheuterusinhopesofresultinginapregnancy.

Moreembryosnotonlyincreasethelikelihoodofaviablepregnancy,theyraisetheriskthatthepregnancycouldinvolvemorethanonefetus–hence,twins,tripletsormore.
