ABSTRACT
Thisstudyexamineddevelopmentalchangesinchildren’sabilityto
understandtheemotionsexpressedinotherchildren’sdrawings.Eighty
participants,ateachoffouragegroups–three,four,?veandsixyears–
werepresentedwithaseriesofchilddrawings,eachexpressingadifferentemotion(happiness,sadness,angerorfear).Alldrawingshadbeen
previouslyratedbyadultjudgesonanemotion-intensityscaleasbeing
goodexemplarsoftheemotionsexamined.Next,participantswereshownpicturesofchildartistseachexpressingoneofthedesignatedemotionsonher/hisfaceandwereinstructedtoidentifytheartistwhocreatedeach
drawing.Theresultsshowedthat:(i)byagethree,childrendemonstratedanunderstandingoftheemotionsexpressedindrawings;(ii)happiness,sadnessandfearweretheemotionsmosteasilyrecognizedbyparticipants.Overall,theseresultsprovidesupportfortheassertionthattheabilitytounderstandtheemotionalmeaningofdrawingsispresentfromthepreschoolyears.
