Ifyouareinterestedinarchaeology,experiencehands-onarchaeologyatWeedonIslandPreserve,oneofFlorida’sexceptionalarchaeologicalsites.AWIAREoffersone-weekcampfocusedonarchaeologyforkidsenteringGrade1and5.Studentswilllearnaboutthebasicarchaeologythroughhands-on,interactiveclassroomprojects,outdooractivities,andavisittoanarchaeologicalsiteintheTampaBayarea.

Day1-2Followedbyengagingicebreakeractivitiesandteam-buildingexercises,participantswillattendthespeechesdeliveredbytheworld-knownarchaeologists.Dr.RobertAustinandDr.JohnArthurwillrespectivelygivespeechesaboutthesiteandlocalhistoryoftheTampaBayarea.Thedayswillconcludewithbasictrainingonexcavationtechniquesandtools,settingthegroundworkforhands-oninvolvementinthearchaeologicalexplorationahead.

Day3-4Participantswillexplorelocalhistoricsiteslong-coveredbyplantsandlearnhowarchaeologistssurveysitesusingdirectmeasurements,digitalcameras,carefulnotes,andhand-heldGPSunits.Thistripwillalsoprovideanopportunitytolearnmoreabouttheenvironmentinwhichthesesiteswerecreated.

Day5-7ParticipantswillbeinvolvedinassistingAWIAREresearchersinexcavation,recordingdata,screeningsediment,andcollectingartifacts,bone,andsamples.What’smore,YouwillalsohelpsortingandprocessingartifactsfromtheexcavationandothersitesintheTampaBayarea.
